چکیده

We recorded articulatory data to investigate the influence of consonantal coarticulation resistance on consonant-vowel timing in Polish onset clusters. While recent studies found different onset-vowel timing patterns depending on the position of the sibilant within the cluster, it is widely unknown how onset-vowel timing interacts with different degrees of coarticulation resistance of the vowel-adjacent consonant. Thus we examined articulatory data of singleton and cluster onsets with different voweladjacent consonants varying in their coarticulation resistance. The results suggest a systematic change in CV overlap between singleton and cluster condition with most overlap for less resistant consonants /m, p, k/ and no changing overlap for most resistant consonants /s, S/. Sonorants /n, l/ show intermediate CV overlap patterns. These results confirm that onset-vowel timing interacts with coarticulation resistance and strengthen the assumption that syllable organization depends on the composition of the entire syllable.

Articulatory Coordination in Coronal Stops: Implications for Theories of Coarticulation

Articulatory data obtained from X-ray films were analyzed to investigate articulatory coordination in Swedish vowels and dental and retroflex stops. Several quantitative frameworks for predicting observed tongue contours were evaluated. Performance was assessed on a set of articulations traced at the V1:C boundary in V1:CV2 sequences. The best model, as determined by an rms-criterion, had 3 par...

Coarticulatory Aggression and Direction of Coarticulation: An Ultrasound Study

Coarticulatory pattern can be varied based on the articulatory dynamics of the sound produced. The present study aims to analyze some of the coarticulatory patterns such as coarticulatory aggression and direction of coarticulation based on ultrasound imaging technique. Ten adult Kannada speakers participated as subjects. The stimuli consisted of V1CV2 sequences, with C corresponding to voiced/v...

Speaking rate effects on locus equation slope

A locus equation describes a 1st order regression fit to a scatter of vowel steady-state frequency values predicting vowel onset frequency values. Locus equation coefficients are often interpreted as indices of coarticulation. Speaking rate variations with a constant consonant-vowel form are thought to induce changes in the degree of coarticulation. In the current work, the hypothesis that locu...

The Effect of Stress and Speech Rate on Vowel Coarticulation in Catalan Vowel-Consonant-Vowel Sequences.

PURPOSE The goal of this study was to ascertain the effect of changes in stress and speech rate on vowel coarticulation in vowel-consonant-vowel sequences. METHOD Data on second formant coarticulatory effects as a function of changing /i/ versus /a/ were collected for five Catalan speakers' productions of vowel-consonant-vowel sequences with the fixed vowels /i/ and /a/ and consonants: the ap...
